Alfie Nicholls is a queer artist based in Bath, UK. Originally studying photography at West Kent College then subsequently graduating from University of the Arts London (UAL), Nicholls made his transition from the photographic to the painterly upon starting Bath Spa University where he would initially study Fine Art (Photography), then transferring to Fine Art (Painting) in the 3rd trimester.
Recently, Nicholls has shifted his narrative to a more figurative approach; at the start of his MA, the process of painting and making was uncertain - often feeling lost under the pressure of trying to prove himself "worthy" as a painter. After much experimentation & critique from tutors & fellow artists, his narrative and visual language soon shaped into what he disciplines in today.
Often, human-like figures occupy his paintings, existing inside spaces illuminated by neon & saturated lights. Nicholls' work confronts the heterotopia - disrupting the space with distinctive queer themes such as male nuditiy and nocturnal elements. The queer space is explored through the architecture that exists within his paintings, and unveils the ways the "things" that exist within them respond to the space.
