Artist Auto-biography
Hello, stranger! This is the place you can learn some things about the guy behind the camera: I grew up in a little corner of southeast England and lived in the western region of Kent. Growing up, I always wanted to be an actor, performing in front of people, phones, and cameras. It wasn't until I started high school that I developed an interest in art; specifically photography. Starting out, I would take pictures of anything I saw, edit them on photoshop, and then upload them to my photography Instagram that had 3 followers... 2 being my parents... nevertheless, this allowed me to develop and experiment with different genres and mediums in photography in my early years and start to gain a following on social media.
Consequently, I got offered a place at West Kent College (now North Kent College) to study a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art & Design: Photography. Going to college was one of the best things that happened to me as this allowed me to explore my practice further and learn crucial skills like studio practice, darkroom work, digital manipulation techniques, printing, etc. I went from getting low passes in my units to eventually achieving distinctions in every project I did - and this led me to University.
I was conflicted on whether to go to uni or not; however, I chose to: I applied to 5 universities, including UAL (University of the Arts London) which is renowned for its alumni and great success after graduation. My year had a 17% acceptance rate, so naturally, I lowered my expectations and worked as hard as I could. After a few agonising months, I finally received my acceptance letter for UAL in April of 2021.
Starting university allowed me to review and admire other young artists' work, inspiring me to push myself and take my practice forward, whilst learning from my peers. Studying at university was a big step for me, and I felt I could expand my research and knowledge further becoming a full-time student.
Aside from my art life, I work part-time in an art supplies store where I get to interact with different kinds of like-minded people daily, as well as develop my teamwork skills in a very passionate environment. The job allows me to work on my analogue art in which, most commonly, I use oil paint on canvases.
In terms of my practice, I use imagery to communicate various messages to audiences through the use of lights in darkness. Recently, I have been experimenting with suburban space; and how coloured lights can re-contextualise a space and give it new meaning. On the other hand, my black and white film work aims to be appreciated from an aesthetic and visual standpoint - there's no set or specific meaning to the work; it is open to interpretation and discussion.
